The Long Walk
I just read the "Richard Bachman" book titled "The Long Walk". It's about a gameshow where the losers die. 100 people are chosen to participate. They start off in a selected area and walk. Minimum of 4 mph. No impeding other walkers. Stay on the road. No contact with any of the people watching on the side of the road. Break any rules and you get a warning. You can have only three warnings. After the third warning, you get shot in the head and killed. But you can gain a warning back after one full hour of walking without getting a warning. All good stuff. But the real point in the story, in my opinion, is the interaction of the Walkers. Very much like real life. In the end, whether you make friends, whether you push everyone away, whether you even acknowledge the existence of others, everyone dies. No matter how you live your life, you die. I know we all die. But this story put it in a different light. I mean, shit...sometimes you have to stop and wonder if it's all worth it.
